Koshi Tappu Wildlife Camp, set up in 1993, was the first luxury camp in this wildlife Reserve. It was set up primarily for bird watchers. The Camp is ideal for all nature lovers seeking peace within a paradise of nature. The Camp is staffed with local naturalists and bird specialists. It has 12 large deluxe safari tents equipped with modern facilities. Its restaurant serves Nepalese and international cuisine and has a fully stocked bar.
The reserve was gazette in 1976 to conserve habitation for the only remaining population of Wild buffalo, Arna (Bubalus arnee). The 176 sq. km. reserve is Nepal's smallest wildlife reserve. The eastern and western embankments of the Sapta Koshi River define the area. In 1987, Koshi Tappu was declared a Ramsar site, a wetland of international significance. Government of Nepal has declared the buffer zone ( 173.5 sq. km ) surrounding the reserve in 2004.
Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve lies on the alluvial flood plain of Sapta Koshi River. This, the largest river in Nepal, flows through the reserve. The Sapta Koshi is one of the three main tributaries of the Ganga.
Reverie and Sal forests and grasslands dominate the vegetation of the reserve. This combination of vegetation and wetland proves a special site for birds and animals.The main mammals here are the Wild Buffalo, Blue Bull and Gangetic Dolphin.Around 300 species of birds have been recorded in this reserve. These include waterfowl, birds of prey, waders, and other water birds. The globally threatened Swamp Partridge (Francolinus Gularis) is also a familiar sight.
The nearby Koshi Barrage has created a vast expanse of water. This makes it the most important staging point for migrating birds. At the same time it is an all year playground for resident ones.Makalu, the world's fifth highest mountain (8,463m), can be glimpsed on a clear day. This enhances the beauty of the scenery dramatically.
How to reach there?
Kathmandu to Biratnagar. Here there are panoramic views of the Eastern Himalayas, including Mt. Everest.A drive of 1 3/4 hours from Biratnagar brings visitors to the deluxe wildlife camp.

Arrival and transfer to your hotel. You will take a short bird watching tour around the marshland. In the evening, you will enjoy a Nepali dinner.
Activities in Koshi tapu wild reserve
You will make a full day excursion in the reserve on a four wheeler and on a boat. Our vehicle will take you around the reserve. The excursion will take you across the forest where you can see waterfowl, birds of prey, marsh crocodile, otters, wild water buffalo and freshwater dolphins many storks, egrets and herons. You can also find the swamp partridge and Bengal florican here. In the evening you will enjoy a cultural dance program followed by dinner.
Activities in Koshi tappu Wild reserve
You will begin by doing some bird-watching. You will go for a walk inside the reserve on grasslands with packed-lunch to see the swamp partridge and the black-necked stork among other beautiful migratory birds. After lunch, you can take an elephant safari. This is a wonderful way to view Arna, the wild water buffalo. You can also see the blue bull (Nilgai) and the hog deer. You return back to the lodge in the evening.
